Detox or cleanse can be scary words. We immediately jump to thoughts of raw soup diets and a militant exercise regime. However, this is not the case. There are a number of ways to cleanse and detox your body naturally, and with ease, so that you can bring balance to your body and restore its natural healing systems.
The best way to take on a cleanse is to gently incorporate healthy choices and routines into your lifestyle one at a time. Simple switches like eating an apple instead of a donut are imperative to the detox process, and remember, small changes add up to big ones over time!
Here are 10 simple and healthy ways to detox your body naturally:
1. Incorporate organic fruits and vegetables into your diet
Simply eating enough fruits and vegetables is great for detoxing – make those organic foods, and you’re even better off! Part of detoxifying your diet is choosing the right foods in order to avoid harmful toxins. Pesticides are just one of many toxins found on our food that can build up in your body and can harm.
Choosing to eat organic might mean planning meals ahead of time to avoid waste, frequenting your local Farmer’s Market, or investing in a delivery service like The Organic Box. All of these options not only help your health, but stimulate the local community and limit your impact on the environment.
2. Get a massage to relax and release toxins
Massages feel so good that we tend to think of them as an extravagance, relegated to being your ‘a couple times a year treat’. While we may be slightly biased towards this point, incorporating frequent massage therapy sessions into your lifestyle has a number of benefits, including releasing the buildup of toxins in your body.
Massages release toxins and tensions, which soothes any discomforts you may feel in your body. Also, the relaxation benefit also aids your body;s healing systems in the long run. There really is not excuse to treat yourself and give your body a boost!
3. Acupuncture is also a great way to detox
While acupuncture might seem foreign or scary, it is actually a great way to cleanse and detox your body. Most natural health treatments take a holistic approach to healing, which means that rather than fixing the symptom and sending you home, your practitioner works to heal your body from the inside-out.
Acupuncture is a modality of Traditional Chinese Medicine that uses tiny, painless needles to activate certain points on your body that are connected to meridians that run through your body. Blockages in these meridians can be the cause behind many health issues, and clearing those blockages and allowing your Qi (energy or life force) to move freely throughout your body, kickstarting your body’s healing process.
4. Drink enough water
There are so many important reasons to ensure you are properly hydrated. Chronic dehydration, which occurs frighteningly often, leads to fatigue, headaches, cramping, and is all-in-all creating a lot of discomfort in your body. This is because water is essential to every function in your body, especially when it comes to your digestive system.
When you dramatically increase your water intake, you may feel the need to use the bathroom more frequently until your body adjusts, but eventually you will notice a huge difference when it comes to your body’s natural detoxification process. Drinking, at the very least, 8 glasses of water a day helps to rid your body of built up toxins.
5. Switch your morning coffee for green tea
Coffee is okay in small doses, but downing an entire pot before you leave for work can have a dramatic impact of your body. For one, it is a stimulant, so when you have too much, you might feel shaky, weak, or like there is a hole burning in your stomach, which is really no fun.
Switching to green tea, which still has a caffeine boost to get your going in the morning, is more hydrating than coffee and offers natural antioxidants that your body needs. Again, proper hydration is key in detoxing your body.
6. Sweat out as many toxins as possible
We all know that Lululemon bag that says, “Sweat once a day.” This is a great mantra for detoxing your body with daily exercise. The more you sweat and replenish your body’s fluids, the more toxins you release! Any type of exercise you prefer to do is fine – just do it once a day. Walking for at least 30-minutes a day is a great way to begin incorporating exercise into your lifestyle.
While exercise is imperative to good health, another add-on may be trying an Infrared Sauna. This heat therapy basically gives you the sweats, which rids your body of toxins, and offers an incredible amount of health benefits. 7. Incorporate a yoga and meditation practice into your routine
Yoga is the perfect way to get in your ‘sweat-a-day’, but meditation and pranayama (yogic breathing techniques) are a great way to de-stress and become more in-tune with your own body. Stress in its own right limits your body’s natural healing systems, so the more you can eliminate daily stress, the better for your mind and body.
Deep breathing, with or without yoga, has many cleansing properties. As you breathe, you take in the positive, and as you breathe out, you release the negative. Asanas or the physical postures are also very cleansing because the movements your body takes on act almost as their own massage, working deep into your musculature to release toxins.

8. Get plenty of sleep
Anyone who says, “Sleep is for the weak,” or this gem, “I’ll sleep when I’m dead,” are most certainly right. A chronic lack of sleep has a detrimental effect on your body and everything your body needs to detox, restore, and heal itself. Avoid sleeping and you are likely going to have health issues crop up that wouldn’t otherwise.
The cells in your body do most of their healing while you are having a restful sleep. This is especially true for detoxing your body. If you are taking other steps to detox, it is imperative that you make the commitment to getting a full night’s sleep (7 to 8 hours) on a regular basis to assist in the healing process.
9. Learn to manage daily stresses
While there are some folks in the world who believe that stress is a good thing, it’s really not great for your body, and over time, this can cause illness. Stress works in small doses due to the fight or flight response our body experiences when put in a stressful situation. We become alert, focused, and for a short time, so pumped on adrenaline that we feel as though we could tackle the world.
Long-term stress, however, can have adverse effects on your health. When you ignore the signs that your body is never coming down and relaxing, you put yourself at risk. Some symptoms may be weight gain, lack of energy, depression, and serious illness.
The best way to avoid this is to slow down and let go of the daily stressors that are weighing you down. Whether that means booking a seeking treatment session, going to a gentle yoga class, or simply relaxing with a book, taking time to manage your stress properly is key to keeping your body running at optimal health.
10. Eliminate common sources of toxins
In order to ensure your body is able to detox naturally, it is essential to cut out as many toxins as possible. This means avoiding taboos such as excessive caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, and processed foods.
It is completely expected that some toxins will build up as a result of everyday living, but adding to the problem with substances that are direct sources of toxins is not a good thing for your overall health.
Whether you to turn to these bad habits for relief or relaxation at the end of the day, they can add up until your body can no longer process them properly. When your body can no longer eliminate these toxins on its own, you will end up with health problems as a result.
The scariest part of detoxing is the idea of ‘going cold turkey’. This thinking is not beneficial because most people will feel overwhelmed. A true detox is about learning to listen to your body, give it the fuel it needs, eliminate habits that are no longer working for you, and one-by-one add in the good habits that will support your body’s natural ability to cleanse and heal itself.
