Acupuncture with Adam Salzman

Considered the oldest practiced medical system in the world, acupuncture got its beginnings in China and Southeast Asia approx. 5000 years ago. It is currently estimated that 1/3 of the world still uses acupuncture as a primary health care modality. In the 1970s, North American interest was spurred when an aide to President Nixon was successfully treated with acupuncture on a tour in China.

With western research and growing interest, we have discovered that needles placed near nerves can mask a pain stimulus through altered neural impulse and release opioid peptides (endorphins and encephalins) and serotonin in the body to create an analgesic effect and a feeling of well being. They can also regulate reflex arc responses and manage spinal cord pain tolerance thresholds.

Acupuncture fundamentally treats the whole being; body, mind and spirit by treating causes of disorders and not symptoms. By inserting needles equal in size to human hair, it works with the body to heal itself. The techniques helps to regulate the body’s vital energy called Qi to work at peak performance and a balanced state. Acupuncturists individually analyze each patient and by using some of over 360 points and related modalities, they tailor-make each treatment plan for the patient.

Registered acupuncturists are strongly regulated and follow tight guidelines. Doctors and Physiotherapists may practice acupuncture but few have had more than a couple classes of training and fully understand this technique. Canadian acupuncturists are required to use pre-sterilized, single-use, disposable needles that are manufactured from medical grade fine stainless steel.

Most people ask, “Is it going to hurt?” Our primary goal is relaxation, comfort and a sense of well-being to allow healing; therefore it is not conducive to create a pain sensation. The thin, sharp nature of the needles allows us to part tissue rather than cut it like regular hypodermic needles.

WHO (World Health Organization) and the National Institutes for Health is the US have declared acupuncture effective for ; addictions, arthritis, back pain, carpal tunnel, chemotherapy nausea and side effects, dental pain, depression, digestive problems, ear problems, fibromyalgia, headaches, infections, colds/blues, insomnia, male disorders, menstrual & female disorders, muscle and joint pain, neurological disorders, post-op, respiratory problems, sinusitis, skin disorders, stroke rehab, urinary problems and more.

Body Psychology with Don Bruce

Most fundamentally the purpose of Body Psychology is to help you discover and release what is being held in your body/mind/spirit. I combine both bodywork and body-centered psychology techniques to help you accomplish this. During a Body Psychology session the touch will vary from very light to deep depending on your interests and needs. With my help and guidance you will be invited to first become aware of the sensations, feelings, and beliefs that are being held in your body, explore them as needed, and then in a gentle, natural and organic way let them go.

On a deeper level, the focus of Body Psychology is to assist, guide, and partner with you to discover, explore, and witness the depths and breadths of your inner-world, with gentleness and respect. This inner world, its anatomy, consists of such things as our inherent nature, stillness, flow, beauty, love, ancient realities, and new realities. There is no limit to what can be discovered.

However, most of us keep ourselves protected from this inner reality. In Body Psychology we aim to find out what patterns and ancestral patterns are unconsciously being used to block you from this inner stillness and flow.

It begins with getting reacquainted and strengthening your connection with Source, our innate innermost true nature, within you. This is your anchor.  From here, while anchored in your true nature, discovering, exploring and then integrating the issues, our and our ancestors’ misunderstandings, which are being held in the tissues of your body / mind. And then as an amazing and wonderful unforeseen but reliable occurrence, healing happens naturally and organically.

There is a specific way that the body holds onto the past, its background and experience. This experience is held or “locked-up” in the cells as cellular memory. When treated with kindness and respect the body will reveal its past: its hopes, dreams, fears and ultimately its connection with the Universe. Learn to understand the language your body and of the wounded parts of your body in order to unlock the old cellular memory – leaving room for the new.

Body Psychology is an integral way to heal, that works. It resolves your symptoms by taking care of your core, (the root), in a respectful, gradual, and gentle way. It is a highly educational and experiential process by which you learn and experience step-by-step healing and how healing occurs. It gives you the fortunate and wonderful opportunity to take back the responsibility for healing and life.

The purpose of Body Psychology and my work is to promote true understanding of ourselves, others, and life in kindness and to end unnecessary pain and suffering. I am committed to who you, first, are. I bring focus, detail, openness, and warmth to my work.

BodyTalk with Nela Afonso, CBP

Stresses, pain and injuries, OH MY

Family, work and children, OH MY

School, exams and assignments, OH MY

Emotions, events and society, OH MY

Business, clients and commerce, OH MY.

Can you relate?  Does this sound like your life?  Are you concerned about how these are affecting your health?  The body has the ability to heal itself at all levels in the same way it heals a cut or a wound.  However, day to day stresses, emotions, and traumas interfere with this natural process by breaking down the natural communication links within the body.  BodyTalk sessions can locate and restore these links for overall health.

BodyTalk is a comprehensive and dynamically designed system of energy medicine that is constantly evolving by unifying a large number of highly recognized healing methods and principles of knowledge into one all-encompassing system.  It can be used as a stand-alone system to address physical, mental and emotional health issues, or can be integrated to support and complement any other health care modality.  It is completely non-invasive, absolutely safe, with no contra-indications whatsoever; there is nothing to lose and everything to gain.  The only side effect is better health.

The momentum of BodyTalk is evident in the fact that within 15 years of being introduced, it has evolved to the point of being offered at the university level, one of which is Mount Royal University in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

Clinical Acupressure with Christy Bruce

Often described as “acupuncture without needles,” Clinical Acupressure promotes balance, rejuvenation, and wellness by accessing and addressing the vital energies of the body. Clinical Acupressure promotes better health and renewed energy by actively involving the client in his or her own healing and growth process.

A full acupressure session can take from 1 to 1 1/2 hours. The client lies fully clothed on a massage table while the practitioner applies gentle pressure to the acupoints. Hands-on work with the fully clothed body releases and strengthens the body’s energy systems–meridians and chakras.

Benefits include relief from many common physical symptoms, including back problems, headaches, respiratory, digestive and systemic problems as well as colds, flu, allergies, healing from injuries, and relief from emotional and mental disturbances. This form of acupressure is especially helpful with stress-related conditions, including post-traumatic stress.

All parts of a human being, and nature itself, are interconnected and dependent on each other. Teachings about this perspective can be traced back thousands of years. The Chinese mapped predictable energy pathways (meridians) throughout the body nearly 4000 years ago. Ancient teachings from India inform us about major energy centers in the body (chakras). These traditions address the vital energies of the body, to facilitate balance, rejuvenation, and wellness.

Clinical Nutrition with Dr. Nooreen Sumar, BSc. ND.

Individualized diets and nutritional supplements may be recommended to address deficiencies, treat disease processes, and promote health. CranioSacral Therapy

Craniosacral therapy is gentle, hands on method of evaluating and normalizing the craniosacral system – this system is comprised of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord. The therapist can feel and correct restrictions found in these tissues, using the bones like handles and assisting the body’s own self correcting mechanisms, which makes this therapy gentle and safe for most conditions.

Craniosacral therapy goes beyond this semi-closed hydraulic system to all areas of the body. The connective tissues of the craniosacral system are connected to all fascia tissue of the body which is like a body stocking that wraps around all muscles, organs, nerves etc and hold everything in place in the body. The therapist evaluates the whole body and uses the same gentle approach, using energy, intention, and touch to help to clear physical restrictions as well as emotional energy blocks that are impeding normal flow and rhythm of energy, fluids and tissues that may be compromising health and vitality. It has been likened to smoothing straightening out layers of saran wrap.

Craniosacral therapy can influence all systems of the body and can be effective for a wide variety of symptoms and conditions, such as headaches, injuries, and chronic pain condtions.

CST has many applications for children and babies. Craniosacral treatments may help birth trauma, assisting to normalize the craniosaral system following difficult births, forcep and cesearean deliveries. Fussy babies and colic are indications for CST, and these therapies have been shown to be useful for learning disabilities, behaviour problems, cerebral palsy and autism.

Price of Sessions – $75.00 – 90.00 /hr. depending on practitioner.

Deep Tissue Massage

Working deep within the muscle layers, deep tissue massage cleanses, invigorates and relieves stress in the tissues. The patient will help guide the practitioner in depth, intensity and frequency or the technique to maximize body benefit. The primary use of deep tissue massage is to alleviate muscle strain, emotional stress and aid in posture by increasing the efficiency of the circulatory system and oxygen transport to overworked muscles. Tight muscles can reduce oxygen and nutrient flow to the musculature producing a build-up of toxins and an inflamed state. Reduction in inflammation of the muscles, tendons and fascia, re-aligning of scar tissue, resetting chronic tension patterns, improved circulation and stress relief are all apparent in deep tissue clients.

Deep tissue techniques are slightly more demanding on the body and therefore may create more tenderness or discomfort than regular massage techniques therefore we suggest increased hydration and breathing techniques for a more beneficial experience. Although in some cases changes are immediately noticeable, long-standing chronic states and patterns may take multiple sessions for the full benefit to be apparent.

Homeopathy is a system of medicine developed in the 18th century by German physician Samuel Hahnemann. Homeopathic remedies work with the body to help stimulate healing functions through the Law of Similars. Homeopathy is a powerful tool that addresses healing on a physical and emotional level. Homeopathic remedies may occasionally result in the temporary aggravation of pre-existing symptoms. If aggravations persist, an antidote may be considered.

Intuitive Counseling with Tami Ambury

Having graduated from the four-year Intuitive and Energetic Development Certification program based in Edmonton, I am one of five independently certified and insurable Intuitive Counselors in North America.

As an Intuitive Counselor, I typically counsel clients in issues of immediate concern to them, reading past, present and most likely future outcomes. Issues touched on in a session may include information about career, relationships, health, life path and more.

In a one hour session, I will usually ask my client to ask specific questions about things in their lives that they may like clarity on. I do not use any tools (i.e. tarot cards, runes, angel cards, etc.) to answer these questions, other than connecting to my guides and my intuition, as I have been trained to get rid of “the middle man”.

iRest®/Yoga Nidra Session

Integrative Restoration (iRest) Yoga Nidra is a contemporary practice of meditative inquiry, a deeply transformative body-centered approach that leads to the integration of body, mind and spirit. This 10-step guided meditative practice uses positive affirmations, visualization, awareness of the body and breath, and self-inquiry (exploring sensations, thoughts, emotions, memories, beliefs). iRest teaches us how to move beyond our conditioned ways of thinking and behaving, and allows us to free up our attention for more creative, spontaneous ways of Being.

What does a private iRest session look like?

In a private session, the client and facilitator will enter into a dialogue. The client is encouraged to focus attention on all that is experienced internally, in terms of body sensations, feelings, emotions, images, memories, etc., and to share what is happening with the facilitator. The facilitator will respond to what the client is reporting, using the iRest tools, thereby simultaneously teaching the client how they might work with these tools on their own.

The session will unfold entirely spontaneously, as neither the client nor the facilitator will know beforehand what might arise in each moment. Each session is a shared journey of discovery wherein sensations are welcomed without judgement, and deeply rooted issues may be explored using opposites in order to encourage resolution. The 10 steps of the iRest protocol are used as they are needed during any given session, therefore private sessions are not structured in any specific way.

Sessions will usually take anywhere from 30-60 minutes, depending on how long the client is able to sustain a focused attention on inner sensations. I offer Reiki following the iRest session, to encourage integration and grounding.

I am curious about iRest but am uncomfortable talking about deeply personal issues with a stranger, so I am hesitant to come for a private session. Will this work for me at all?

iRest is safe, and effective, for anyone. iRest sessions are different from sessions with, for example, a psychotherapist or psychologist, where you are encouraged to talk about the issues you’re trying to deal with.

During a private iRest session, the facilitator will help to guide you inward, into the physical body and deeper, into the realm of feelings and emotions, belief systems and memories, when you are ready to do so. The iRest protocol is designed in such a way that there is no need to talk about the specifics of the issues you are trying to deal with. You will never have to talk about any particular experiences you have been through, if that doesn’t feel right to you, and the protocol will still be effective.

You will be invited and encouraged to do your work with those issues internally, while the facilitator offers suggestions and may ask some questions, to help you explore those issues, assisting you in the process of allowing space to open up within yourself for new insights to emerge, or a new way of being with everything so that change can occur spontaneously. The facilitator, without knowing any of the details of your story, can offer you tools that you will be able to use on your own.

How many sessions will I need?

In private sessions, we can tailor the process to meet your specific needs. A minimum of three sessions would probably be helpful, as it takes some time to familiarize yourself with the 10 steps of the iRest protocol and a single session may not give you a full understanding of the benefits it may offer you.

The protocol is designed in such a way that the client/student will learn how to use the iRest tools on their own, so that they can be applied in everyday life situations, outside of a formal one-on-one session with a facilitator. Each session unfolds in a very spontaneous and unpredictable way, and sometimes, when a certain issue/symptom has been resolved, another one that was buried a little deeper may come to the surface asking for your attention. Ultimately, it is up to the client to decide how many sessions they feel they can benefit from.

Who can benefit from iRest?

iRest has been beneficial to many groups of people, including those with chronic pain, post-traumatic stress, anxiety, sleeplessness, homeless people, college students and veterans. iRest has also been used successfully with people from all age groups, from young children to the elderly. iRest offers us tools for use in our daily lives; it is safe and empowering and therefore can be beneficial for everyone.

Lymphatic Drainage

Lymphatic drainage therapy is a light touch wholistic bodywork therapy where the therapist stimulates the flow of lymphatic circulation in the body. The therapist uses sensitive listening with his/her hands to assist the flow  of lymphatic fluid through the lymphatic  pathways, following the body’s natural rhythm of lymphatic waves as the guide to hand movement.

Its main actions and benefits are:

  • It activates lymph function and cirulation, indirectly activates blood circulation and reabsorption of fluid, and reduces edema (swelling) through these effects.
  • Stimulates the immune system
  • Calms the nervous system by decreasing the sympathatic response (fight or flight) and directly stimulates the parasympathetics (calmer repair) thereby reducing pain, spasms, and assisting relaxation.

Qigong with Kristian Olsvik

Qigong (Pronounced: Chee – Gong) is an ancient exercise often referred to as Chinese Yoga. What makes it unique is its simplicity and main focus on the centre of the body, where our power comes from.

The class teaches you a system of exercises to help develop a youthful, mobile body, long tendons (which means long life is Daoist philosophy), strong joints, good posture, and methods to release physical and psychological stress. Through regular practice you will increase blood circulation, detoxify, enhance sensory abilities, develop a stronger immune system, and boost cognitive functions.

The main goal of this class is to give you a foundation to lead a long and productive life whether it is to practise traditional arts like T’ai Chi, Yoga, Kung Fu, or Meditation at a higher level or to simply wake up pain free and enjoy recreational activities without injury. It is a simple practice,

30 – 45 minutes in length, with quick results and lasting effects when practised regularly.

Class times: Tuesdays 5:45 – 6:45 pm

Reflexology

Reflexology promotes deep relaxation, reduces stress and tension, improves circulation and optimizes body function. Reflexology stimulates the body’s natural healing processes and generally has a revitalizing effect on the entire system.

The body is mapped out on the foot through thousands of nerve endings. Reflexology uses a compression technique that applies pressure to reflex points on the feet relating to these nerve endings. This creates a physiological change in the body.

Through a series of 10 session you will be invited to learn about and discover your center or the core of your body / mind / and spirit and how to live and move from there. If you already know your center or core it is an opportunity to deepen your relationship and improve your able to move from it.

Rolfing address how one aspect of our self (body, mind ,spirit) relates to another, how these aspects stop communicating or relating to one another and then how to regain their natural equilibrium. Rolfing is a education training experience for the body, mind, spirit.

Rolfing is a technique of body manipulation that changes your body so that it becomes more vertical and symmetrical. When the major segments of your body are lined up and stacked in a proper relation to one another, you will look and feel your best. Working with your guided movements, the Rolfer slowly stretches and repositions the body’s supportive wrappings, called fascia. This firm and gentle directed pressure restores normal length and elasticity to the network of deep connective fibers, allowing these changes to occur. In addition to physical manipulation, Rolfing includes education in using your realigned body properly, and exploration of the emotional issues that may arise as your body changes.

The standard 10 session series may be completed at the rate of one session per week or spread over as long as 6 months. Each session is different, and builds on the ones that have gone before. Sessions are simultaneously tailored to your specific situation, and follow a logical pattern to produce the greatest results.

Sessions last approximately 1 hour. The results of Rolfing are not only lasting, they are progressive. You are likely to feel and look continuously better for several months after your last session.

You will not need to repeat the basic 10 sessions, though for most people an average of 3 sessions a year supports an aging process that is more comfortable, graceful and slower than we have pictured previously.

Somatic Massage

A somatic approach is a treatment that supports the body’s natural response to move towards more efficient and congruent movement.

It is based on 2 physiological responses of the body: Sensory based learning & Pattern organization

The more sensory information an organism is provided, the greater it’s opportunity to recognize dysfunction and move towards greater functionality.

In treatment, a somatic massage uses touch and movement to enhance the clients sensory input and self awareness. The therapist is trained to identify dysfunctional patterns and guide the client through their body’s attempt to self regulate and re-balance.

Where free movement is restricted by habitual responses or compensatory patterns, techniques are applied to facilitate dissolution of restrictions and the re-integration of the freed movement pattern

Price of Session: $75.00 – 90.00 an hr. depending on practitioner

Sports Massage

Sports massage covers pre-event, post-event and intramural massage. There is also sports related massage where, depending on the sport, particular muscle groups are targeted.

Sports massage is great for prevention of injury as well as recovery from high performance activity.  It helps to milk lactic acid and metabolic waste from muscles and peripheral tissues. Techniques used are effleurage, petrissage, tapotement, “kneading”, “squeezing”, “wringing”, cross fibre frictions, trigger point therapy and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (which is an active/passive stretching technique).

SomatoEmotional Release

Somato-emotional release (SER) is the expression/release of emotion that has been retained, suppressed and isolated within the body/mind.

An SER process is facilitated by gentle, well-intentioned touch between a therapist and client. The therapist listens and follows a client’s subtle or large body signals and movements. A process may be silent or facilitated through therapist guided dialogue and reflective imagery.

SER often results in:

        • Release and softening in general or specific body parts and tissue
        • Emotional release
        • Increased clarity and awareness, greater body-mind connection

Observation of the SER process suggests that independent retention of the energy or memory of both physical and emotional trauma is frequently accomplished by specific body parts, regions and viscera.” Dr John Upledger  (Upledger Institute of Cranio-sacral studies – Founder of SER)

Tandem Body Work

Tandem sessions at Healing Connections are led by senior therapists, Anne Belolorec and Matthew van der Giessen. Tandem sessions have been developed as a protocol through on-going studies done by the Upledger Foundation. The Foundation has found that work by two or more therapists can greatly enhance the effectiveness of the work done, particularly in complicated or fragile healthcare situations.

Tandem sessions are gentle and often allow more space for the client’s body to respond with greater ease to the supportive environment that two therapists can provide. A client’s body will risk maker greater shifts in stuck patterns of thought, emotion, and/or movement, when he/she feels a stronger sense of “held space” and safety. Clients are more likely to complete the resolution of a problem areas because we can touch and affect more of the threads of affected areas at once, and complete the shifting of tissue or energy, rather than accomplish one smaller piece per session (which is more likely to return to its problem pattern). The therapists benefit because tandem sessions frequently reveal more depth of a condition, or more of what tissue is involved and how it is affecting other areas of the body.

Tandem sessions with Anne and Matthew work primarily with techniques from fluid-fascia, lymph, and energetic based therapies – most commonly called Light Bodywork . The therapists also complement each other’s skill set, drawing upon their own specializations to provide a broader range of therapeutic approaches that support the body’s particular needs for a reorganization.

Matthew’s experience in direct pressure and deep tissue techniques, and Anne’s specializations in Light Bodywork allow the team to provide consultation and support for ongoing treatment within a greatly enhanced knowledge environment. Clients sometimes find that individual sessions with each therapist can complement the benefits of tandem sessions by providing more specific treatment in each therapist’s area of specialization.

As a new approach to treatment, tandem sessions are becoming an opportunity for enhanced treatment with other therapists at Healing Connections. Matthew and Anne also lead tandem sessions with the clinic’s therapists who specialize in acupuncture, Somatics influenced massage, and Reiki, including work with more than two therapists when there is a demonstrated need.

When Anne and Matthew team up for a tandem session, you’re in for a treat!  Their 40-years of experience, combined, in craniosacral and other therapies is truly powerful. Matthew’s mastery of somatic patterning, inter-woven with Anne’s special blend of treatments from many modalities ignites an awesome experience of self-healing.  After the session I felt free, balanced, and energized.  It’s a life-changing experience, and I highly recommend everyone to give them a try.

Therapeutic Massage

Massage has many therapeutic benefits, some of which are the following;

Inflamatory Response – stimulation from massage activates a release of the body’s own anti-inflamatory agents.

Tissue Repair – Massage has been shown to slow the formation of scar tissue and keep scar tissue pliable when it does form.

Pain – Massage may help reduce the need for pain medication, thus reducing the side effects of medication.

Impingement Syndrome - Cervical Plexus, Brachial Plexus, Lumbar Plexus and the Sacral Plexus. Massage methods can soften and stretch connective tissue that may impinge nerves as well as normalize muscle tension patterns, restoring a more normal resting length to shortened muscles to reduce pressure on nerves.

Psychological Dysfunctions – Trauma, Postraumatic Stress Disorder, Pain and fatigue syndromes, Anxiety and Depressive Disorders, Stress Related Illness……..Massage intervention has a strong physiologic effect from the comfort of compassionate touch as well as a physical influence on mental state through the effect on the Autonomic Nervous System and neurochemicals. Soothing of any ANS hyperactivity provides a sense of inner balance.

Therapeutic Bodywork

The primary goal of Therapeutic Bodywork, or “fix-up work”, is to resolve the primary issue you are having with your body.  This most typically involves resolving issues of chronic pain and stiffness in specific areas of your body. Some of the techniques used are Deep Tissue Massage, Myofascial release, and energetic techniques such as Craniosacral Therapy and Therapeutic Touch. Even though the goal of Therapeutic Bodywork is not relaxation, you are likely to be quite relaxed by the end of such a session.

Some of the benefits of Therapeutic Bodywork sessions include pain relief from repetitive motion, motor vehicle accidents, falls, sport injuries, and surgeries. It also helps relieve the tension and stress that typically gets lodged in the classic chronic pain zones of your body such as the head, neck, shoulders, low back, hips and the joints of your body.

With the Therapeutic Bodywork sessions, you will be resolving your primary concerns, without receiving and experiencing the wholistic benefits of the Rolfing ten session series protocol or recipe. In many cases this involves simply resolving an issue in your physical body. However, within a Therapeutic Bodywork session working with issues of your body-mind (Body Psychology) can and is often used depending on your interests and needs.

Sound Massage with Kristian Olsvik

Disease is a disharmony of the vibration of the cells, tissues and organs of the body. The sound massage has an immediate beneficial effect starting to bring the vibrating cells back into their harmonious state.

The sound massage affects each cell of the body. Take the example of a lake. When a stone is thrown in it, the stone creates concentric movements of the water, affecting the whole of the lake. Similarly, when sounding the singing bowls on or near the body, the vibration of the sound reaches each and every cell via the water in our body.

Our body consists of about 80 % of water. In his extensive research, Dr. Masaru Emoto proved water is an excellent carrier of information. This is advantageous when sounding the singing bowls, which are placed on or near the client’s dressed body. The healing sound vibration gently flows into the body, affecting the structure and health of cells and organs favourably.

Traditional Chinese Medicine with Dr. Nooreen Summar, BSc. ND.

Traditional Chinese Medicine includes the use of acupuncture, Eastern herbs and dietary changes to invite balance. It is based on the theory that all existence and activity including health and disease can be explained by the constant interaction of two universal forces: Yin and Yang. Disease can arise when these forces fail to be in equilibrium.

Acupuncture is the act of inserting sterilized, disposable needles through the skin into the underlying tissues at specific points on the body that correspond to the acupuncture meridian systems. Stimulation of these points can disperse blocked, stagnant energy, and allow for the body to regain equilibrium. Eastern herbs may be given for internal or external use in the form of pills, tinctures, or strong teas. Dietary advice is based on traditional Chinese medical theory.
