Types of Massage

Therapeutic Massage

Massage has many therapeutic benefits including:

  • Anti-Inflammatory Response – massage activates a release of the body’s own anti-inflammatory agents.

  • Tissue Repair – massage slows the formation of scar tissue and keeps scar tissue pliable when it does form.

  • Pain Management – massage may help reduce the need for pain medication

  • Impingement Syndrome Relief – massage softens and stretches connective tissue that may be impinging on nerves. Massage also normalizes muscle tension patterns, restoring a more normal resting length to shortened muscles to reduce pressure on nerves. Effective on the Cervical Plexus, the Brachial Plexus, the Lumbar Plexus and the Sacral Plexus.

  • Relief from Psychological Dysfunctions – Massage has a strong physiologic effect as well as a physical influence on mental states through the Autonomic Nervous System. Massage is soothing of any ANS hyperactivity and provides a sense of inner balance. Suitable for Trauma, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, Pain and fatigue syndromes, Anxiety and Depressive Disorders, and Stress Related Illness.

Sports Massage

Sports massage covers pre-event, post-event and intramural massage. There is also sports related massage where, depending on the sport, particular muscle groups are targeted.

Sports massage is great for prevention of injury as well as recovery from high performance activity.  It helps to milk lactic acid and metabolic waste from muscles and peripheral tissues. Techniques used are effleurage, petrissage, tapotement, “kneading”, “squeezing”, “wringing”, cross fiber frictions, trigger point therapy and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (which is an active/passive stretching technique).

Relaxation Massage

In our stressful lives, we all deserve and need to relax. Massage therapy is just the right technique for that. It will soothe your mind and body. The length of the massage depends on you. Most relaxation massages are between an hour and two hours and are suitable to people of all ages. Relaxation massage involves a smooth, flowing style that improves circulation and relieves muscular tension. Relaxation is very beneficial for our overall health.

Fertility Massage

Fertility challenges is something that 1 in 4 couples will face. We usually believe that fertility challenges are female related, but reality is that 50% of fertility challenges are male related and 50% are female related. Most fertility clinics have a minimum of 12 month wait time before you can get in to see someone (that is just to talk and plan out what you will be doing). Couples must have been actively trying to conceive for a minimum of 1 year before they are even referred to the fertility clinic.

Fertility Massage may be something to consider while trying to conceive. It is a blend of massage, uterine & organ positioning, reflexology, shiatsu and working with meridians to assist with conception and is a treatment that both partners can have done. It also reviews and addresses other concerns that could be creating blocks for a successful pregnancy with complimentary therapies suggested. As long as there is open communication between client and practitioner, Fertility massage can be given (or continued) while actively working with the fertility clinic, to increase the chance of conception.

*Fertility massage is offered by Karin Monkman.
