Energetic Hygiene: Clearing and Protecting Your Energy

We often talk about physical hygiene, brushing our teeth, washing our face, cleaning our homes but how often do we tend to our energy in the same way?

Your energy field is an extension of your body. It absorbs, reflects, and interacts with everything and everyone you come across from conversations with friends to passing someone in a grocery store or walking down a hallway in your apartment building. Energetic imprints can be left behind and can attach to items, rooms, or even to our own physical body.

Think of those moments when you’ve had a conversation with a friend or family member who’s going through a hard time. You want to help them feel better, and afterwards, your own body feels heavy, maybe your happy mood turned into sadness.

That’s a sign you’ve picked up and are holding onto the energy of another person.

As we start to near the holidays, spending more time at gatherings, parties, and family events, it’s the perfect time to learn how to practice spiritual hygiene.

What is Spiritual Hygiene?

Spiritual hygiene is the practice of keeping your energy field in an aligned state through cleansing, protection, containment, and discernment.

We don’t have to hold the energy of others or take it on as our own. Once you begin understanding how to cleanse and protect your field, you’ll notice how much lighter and clearer you feel.

So, what can we do?

Cleanse

When we pick up energy that doesn’t belong to us, cleansing helps us release it and return to alignment.

Some simple ways to clear your energy:

  • Move your body. Go for a run, dance, or gently shake your body to release stagnant energy.

  • Use water. Take a bath or shower with the intention of washing away what’s not yours. Water is one of the most powerful energetic cleansers.

  • Smudge or spray. Use sage, cedar, palo santo, or an energy-clearing mist to cleanse your space and field.

  • Breathe. Take slow, deep breaths into the areas that feel heavy, and exhale with the intention of releasing.

It doesn’t need to be complicated, just tune into what feels right for you. Your intuition will always guide you toward the tools you need most.

Protect

Protection creates an energetic boundary around you — not to block connection, but to filter what comes in. Think of it like a light bubble around your energy field, allowing love to flow while keeping out what isn’t yours.

Protection can look like:

  • Visualization. Surround yourself in a bubble of light — white, gold, or any color that feels strong for you.

  • Crystals or jewelry. Wearing protective stones like black tourmaline, obsidian, or amethyst can help anchor your field.

  • Elemental or sacred geometry. Call in the Earth element or visualize sacred geometric shapes forming around you.

  • Golden gloves. If you’re a practitioner or often use your hands in healing work, imagine putting on golden gloves before a session.

You can layer your protection depending on what feels right in the moment.

Try this next time you go into Costco, if you’ve ever felt instantly overwhelmed in there, you’ll notice the difference when you walk in with your energetic bubble on!

Contain

Sometimes when we’re sitting with a friend or family member who’s venting or processing something heavy, they’re releasing energy and our natural instinct is to help by taking some of that on.

Even when our intention is to support, we don’t need to hold someone else’s pain in our own body.

Instead, try this:

  • Think of an object: it can be physical or something you visualize. Maybe it’s a crystal, a rock, a bowl of water, or an orb of light.

  • Set the intention that this object will collect any energy that isn’t yours.

  • Let it hold that energy while you stay clear and grounded in your own body.

At the end of the conversation or the end of your day, cleanse or clear the object. You can visualize it being washed, thrown into light, or transmuted into a higher frequency.

This one simple practice can shift so much.

Everyday Energy Care

You don’t need to know energy work to do these practices — anyone can do them, anywhere.

Energetic hygiene can be practiced in small moments:

  • At the grocery store

  • Before meeting loved ones for dinner

  • While scrolling social media

  • During a work meeting

The possibilities are endless.

The key is awareness. When you feel off, pause and ask yourself: “Is this energy mine?”

If you get a yes, try one of the practices above to help release what’s built up and bring yourself back into alignment.

If you get a no, tune into your own energy, there might be something deeper asking to be felt or released.

If it feels like something big is being held in your body, you don’t have to navigate it alone. You’re welcome to book an Energetic Release Session with me, where we’ll gently explore what’s present and help your energy return home to its natural rhythm.
